Back to School:

A Walk Down Memory Lane

Hello Dear Readers,

With schools reopening this week, I find myself reminiscing about my own childhood days, particularly the simple lunches my mom used to make. Back then, life was much different, but the memories are still vivid.

Lunchtime Memories

In the old school I attended, our lunches were pretty straightforward. On a hot day, sandwiches often became soggy if they had mayonnaise, so peanut butter and jelly became the go-to option. I can still remember the milk cartons that were delivered—unfortunately, they were often left near the old-fashioned radiator. Warm milk was definitely not a treat!

We didn’t have the fancy insulated jugs that kids carry around today. If we were lucky enough to have a lunch box, it was usually one of those square tin ones with a cartoon character on the outside. But often, we didn’t even have that, making do with whatever we could.

The Simple Life

As I reflect on those days, I realize we didn’t fuss over what we didn’t have—we simply didn’t know life any differently. There wasn’t a bus to take us to school, so we walked about a mile each way, regardless of the weather. It was just what we did.

Looking back, it was a simple life. There was no technology to keep us indoors, so we played outside—partly because our small house was already packed with nine people! I imagine it gave my parents a bit of peace and quiet, even if just for a moment.

Then and Now

Contrasting those days with today’s fast-paced, tech-driven world makes me appreciate the simplicity of my childhood even more. We didn’t have much, but we didn’t need much either. Life was about making do with what we had, enjoying the little things, and being together as a family.

As our kids head back to school, it’s a good reminder to cherish the simplicity that still exists in life. Maybe we can all take a moment to step back, slow down, and appreciate the little things—just like we did back then.

Warm regards,

Dr. Peggy
